Diwali or Deepavali or Deepawali is one of the biggest festivals of India. Deepavali festival is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm, pomp and show every year. Its a long festival lasting for five days. As soon as the Dussehra festival gets over, preparations for Diwali start across the country.
The festival of Diwali is celebrated on the night of Amavasya as per Hindu calendar. When Lord Rama along with Laxman and Sita returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, lamps were lit by Ayodhya residents to welcome them. From that day onwards the festival of Diwali is celebrated. Although this is a Hindu festival, the day is also celebrated by even various non-Hindu people.
Diwali or Deepavali is also called a festival of lights. Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshiped on Deepawali night. People decorate their houses with earthen lamps, candles, rangoli, flowers, and various other kinds of decorations. Firecrackers are also burst on this day. People wear new clothes on the day. Gifts and sweets are also given to friends, family, relatives, customers, office employees, and other known people.
These days eco-friendly or green Diwali is being promoted. It is recommended that we use only earthen lamps and organic colors for Diwali and avoid the bursting of firecrackers as they can be harmful to the ecosystem and cause air and noise pollution
