Actinomycetes are important in coniferous forests and in chaparral, mountain-brush, and sagebrush-grass communities and are most valued as food and cover for wildlife. Although recognized for their pioneer and seral roles in succession, the significance and potential of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in these plants have generally been neglected. The ecology and root-nodule symbiosis of Ceanothus fendleri, Cercocarpus ledifolius, and Purshia tridentata are discussed to illustrate the status of knowledge about the ecological importance of actinomycete-nodulated plants in the arid and semiarid West.
