Blue Green Algae is NOT important to the economy, in fact it is generally harmful. Blooms of BGA choke lakes and ponds and cause mass fish kills. Some BGA are toxic.

Spirulina is a BGA that is grown on a small scale for use a food supplement, since it is rich in protein.

Some species of BGA may be a good source of biofuel if grown in small ponds and harvested at an economical cost.

USEFUL ACTIVITIES:

BGA secretes an acidic chemical which decreases the alkalinity of soil.

Some are used as green manure

Some secrete toxin, which inhibit the growth of mosquito larva in water.

HARMFUL ACTIVITIES:

Water bloom

BGA can grow in water tanks and pollute the water
