Pteridophytes constitute the most primitive seedless vascular plants which reproduce by means of spores. They are the true land plants and are also called as ‘vascular cryptogams’.

Haeckel (1866) called these groups of plants as “Pteridophytes” because of their pinnate or feather-like fronds (leaves).

The Pteridophytes are known to be of high economic importance.

1. Ornamental value: Ferns are known to have an attractive foliage and therefore, they are grown as ornamental plants in gardens and homes.

2. Dryopteris is a wood fern whose rhizomes and petioles are used as an anti-helminthic drug.

3.  The sporophytic body also called as the Sporocarps of the Marsellia plant are known to be a rich source of starch. They are eaten as food for their high nutritious value.
