In order to find the area to be painted, the following formulas should be used :-
Total surface area = 6a² (a being the edge)
Lateral surface area = 4a² (a again denoting edge)
Total surface area refers to the entire surface area of the shape.
Lateral surface area refers to the area of the shape excluding the top and bottom faces.
T.S.A and L.S.A for other shapes :-
Total surface area of a cuboid = 2(lb + bh + hl)
Lateral surface area of a cuboid = 2hl + 2bh =≥ 2h(l+b) {or} Perimeter of base × height
l,b, and h represent length, breadth and height respectively.
Total surface area of a cylinder = 2πrh + 2πr² =≥ 2πr(h+r)
Lateral surface area of a cylinder = 2πrh
h and r denote height and radius respectively.
