editorial letter on cell phone addiction

To the editor: Marijuana, cocaine, heroin, etc., — there is no drug in the world with a bigger addiction rate than the cellphone. I attended an event at my child’s school last week. I was sitting at a table with another lady who apparently had three children. Two of her small boys were trying to get her attention. She consistently played with her cellphone for close to an hour. I could tell her boys were sad. There were many other parents there doing the same thing.
When this lady left with her children, some other children sat at my table. Parents nowhere near them.
If I had stood in the middle of the gymnasium smoking a joint, everyone would have had a fit. Since the cellphone addiction is legal, it was deemed OK. I was one of few people who actually watched the children perform without looking at a cellphone. The cellphone, in my opinion, is replacing the parent.
Parents appear to be so disconnected from their children because of the severe addiction. Does anyone wonder why our country keeps going downhill? People do not seem interested in taking responsibility anymore. The almighty cellphone is the new god (drug) of choice.
