Letter to the Editor: Earth Day is today
Posted Apr 22, 2018 at 1:00 PM
To the editor,
Earth Day is April 22.
Look out your window and see the plastic bag dangling from your tree, swaying with the breeze or see how many of them are wafting through a nearby field, or lining the gutters of your street. Well, pick them up!
Count how many plastic bottles you can find tossed in empty lots, in school yards or downtown streets.
Every day in this country 50,000 straws are used one time then thrown away. Imagine what you could do with all those straws! Instead of plastic straws, you could pretend to be European and use stainless steel or paper straws. Wanna make a change? Do you want an Earth that can sustain life? There is only one living, breathing planet and that is our Earth.
Instead of plastic bags which take forever to break up, and when they do, they leave tiny particles of toxic chemicals to be released into the soil and water, you could use paper bags! And reuse them for anything! Or get reusable cloth bags! They will last you a lifetime!
Instead of bottled water a stainless steel bottle can last a lifetime. Switzerland based World Wildlife Fund International said, “bottled water may be no safer or healthier than tap water, while selling for up to 1,000 times the price. There are higher standards regulating tap water in Europe and the United States than those applied to bottled water.”
Scientists predict that if nothing changes, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, by weight. Plastic found in the stomachs of many species were the cause of their death. Ingestion of micro plastics could increase the transportation of harmful chemicals as well. And if people are eating poisoned marine life?
Love and care for our Mother Earth. We only have one planet to live on, and do overs are not going to work.
Get out there on Earth Day and pick up some trash!
