Answer:

There is something every Indian thinks about at least once in their life or knows a family member who does i.e. settling abroad. The “Videshi” dream is one of the few impressions of a legacy that India has not been able to outgrow. It seems to be a matter of pride for Indian families to send their children abroad – both for studies and for work. Every country has lots of emigrants which is not the point, what worries me is why migrating abroad has become a status symbol? This is not me getting patriotic before India-Pakistan match, this is hardcore patriotism. So let’s get started with why this happens and where things are going wrong.

Explanation:

There is something every Indian thinks about at least once in their life or knows a family member who does i.e. settling abroad. The “Videshi” dream is one of the few impressions of a legacy that India has not been able to outgrow. It seems to be a matter of pride for Indian families to send their children abroad – both for studies and for work. Every country has lots of emigrants which is not the point, what worries me is why migrating abroad has become a status symbol? This is not me getting patriotic before India-Pakistan match, this is hardcore patriotism. So let’s get started with why this happens and where things are going wrong.

Reason No-1: Unemployment in India

Unfortunately, the economic system in our country has made getting a job the ultimate achievement. Within that government, jobs are at a premium because they give job security, periodic pay increases, pension with lesser accountability.

PM Modi was mocked, when he tried to give people a realistic answer that with a 130 crore population there are limits to the number of jobs any democratically elected government can create. The only solution to this is self-employment (He gave an example of selling bhajiya) & startups which will turn out to be employment generators.

There are plenty of examples of people out there who are working on a venture even when they can easily secure a well-paying job just because they want to make a difference. What is common to these people is the possession of a skill, willingness to take risks and being driven by something they relate to. Notwithstanding the fact that scaling up from thousands to millions of entrepreneurs is not easy, these traits must be instilled in the youth by every teaching institution. That’s something our country can work on.

Reason 2- Earning Dollars

Canada is also called “mini- India” because why not. I have come across a few people who don’t know what they want to do in life; it’s just that they want to settle in the US. I feel really good on seeing them enjoying themselves in Facebook pictures. However, while Canada may seem like a great place to go to, the reality of the situation may be quite different. One of the people I know shared something that I was shocked.

Students pursuing higher education like MBA, a relevant degree in engineering have got jobs in factories & of course, they were from a well-to-do family, few became truck drivers. Now I do not consider any job as less important but I felt bad on hearing this. These people just for the sake of earning in dollars (which will be more than what an average MBA earns in India) have gone to Canada to be employed in jobs requiring minimum skills.

Remaining stuck in such jobs would mean a substandard quality of life as per the Canadian Living Index. It should be noted that these students belong to families who are financially well-off. Their parents could easily afford higher education in India. I wondered then what the rationale was behind sending their kids away to Canada or some other country.

Third Reason- Kya ghatiya country hai bro!

For some people, the motivation to leave India is because – “the whole system is screwed up”. They take whining to be their core hobby and believe that there is green grass on the other side. A lot of times they realize that the grass is not that green anywhere and they get stuck unable to be either a Videshi or a Desi. India doesn’t really lose when these people leave.

Even after so much efforts in Swach Bharat Abhiyan, people complain about lack of cleanliness but still throw garbage on the roads, saying the whole country is dustbin. Educated Indians prefer to settle for jobs in MNC’s as scientists, engineers, and doctors rather than hunting for opportunities back home. Gender inequality is rampant and so is corruption and pollution. Reservations, while intending to protect the interests of the underprivileged, often keep deserving candidates from claiming rightful opportunities. Medical and healthcare facilities often out of reach of the poor people in society. The idea that migrating overseas will give one and one’s family a better life is one of the dominant sentiments behind India’s great emigration numbers.

I don’t deny there are few things wrong with our country. But people like Mukesh Ambani, Ratan Tata, PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, MS Dhoni, Shahrukh Khan, Sachin Bansal, are a rare breed representing the country who wish to take India to greater heights & actually fixing the wrongs in our country or fields where we lack. Youth these days are mostly self-driven, instead of contributing to their country they are bartending or driving trucks to cover the extra money they have spent for studying abroad & settle for a corporate job in other countries. Makes Sense? Let’s work for a country where instead of whiners, we get more and more executors.
