Bholi was a damaged girl since childhood because she used to stammer and was no considered even pretty due to small pox being on her face.
She was educated and her teachers had taught her to love herself and stand up for herself. This education helped her to have a broader mind and perspective of life. That life for women does not end on marriage breaks.
When Bishamber became greedy and demanded dowry, she refused her father to give any dowry to the groom. She knew that she could achieve something in life and thus wanted that her father must not give in to a greedy man. She probably saw the mentality.
