Answer:

Just like the body needs a balanced diet, the mind also needs wholesome education. Therefore, education should not focus on a few subjects and ignore the others. Arts and music are important to mankind because of historical, cultural, and psychological reasons.

The historical importance of arts can be understood from the fact that our knowledge of primitive man came mainly from the paintings on the cave walls. Similarly our scriptures have been passed down from one generation to another through oral musical rendition. The same is true for folktales too. Arts and music are part of our very identity.

Additionally, on the psychological front, literary and fine art subjects nurture emotions, their expression and the development of new schools of thought. For instance, it is through the writings of pre- independence writers that we know of the effects of the British rule on the minds of Indians, and how they came together as a nation to overthrow the foreign rule. Similarly, the paintings of the Renaissance artists showcased the psychological depths of humans. Science or Maths alone cannot do justice to such subtleties of human nature.

Furthermore, it is challenging to divide life into compartments. While humanities includes history, archaeology that is closely associated history is a more scientific subject. Education that lays emphasis only on Math and Science and completely disregards arts and music will be lopsided and woefully inadequate.
