I may be mistaken, but I believe you may mean environmental attenuation using natural degradation or bio-remediation. This tends to work well in such matters as land based oil spills where Volatile Fractions can evaporate into the air and bacteria can digest any remaining residues over time. Temperature and the access to oxygen and the ability of different types of bacteria, Facultative and Aerobic species to digest such residues is always the central issue. Laboratories can grow such bacteria and seed such spill sites. Unfortunately, most hazardous chemicals are also toxic to bacteria, so the ability of bio-remediation is rather limited. In the oceans, bioremediation is restricted to the surface and the photic zone… once wastes get below the photic zone, remediation any recovery is solely due to dilution effects. In cases where massive oil spills have occurred in the ocean and gulf of Mexico, the crude oil clumps together and sinks. The areas on the bottom when it lands are literally deserts today. No life will exist on those huge underwater patches.. they have been snuffed out… devoid of all life. Benthic organisms suffer the very worst.
