Enzyme Inhibition

Enzyme inhibition refers to a decrease in enzyme-related processes, enzyme production, or enzyme activity. A number of clinically important interactions between drugs result from CYP450 inhibition. CYP450 inhibitors are different in their selectivity toward enzymes and are classified by their mechanisms of action. Some drugs are potent competitive inhibitors and compete for the active site, but they are not a substrate for the enzyme (e.g., quinidine and CYP2D6), while other drugs are noncompetitive inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole and CYP3A4).
