Germany lost to the allies in WW1 and suffered huge territorial losses giving away its land and population to Poland, Russia, France, Belgium an Denmark and ultimately had to sign The Treaty of Versailles. Terms of the treaty were: ... Germany had to accept the "War Guilt Clause" and pay reparations.

Quite harshly. And Germany was already suffering badly before the war ended. So on top of an already flagging economy, food shortages, and other such things, the German peoples were forced to pay to restore France and Belgium and pay reprimands to them and Britain. To the point where the German currency was more valuable as something to light a fire then to spend on food or anything.

While France and Britain were figuring out how to hurt Germany even more, the US was not very happy with the whole Treaty of Versailles. Even though Wilson 'tried' to spin it into something positive, even he was disgusted by how harsh it was. It was never ratified in the US, and Wilson warned Britain and France that this could come back to haunt them. And a generation later, we have an even bigger war in WWII.
