NATIONAL STUDENTS FINANCIAL AIDS SCHEME

It is a South African government scheme for undergraduate students to help pay the cost of their tertiary education after finishing high school. The financial aids are funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training. This scheme was formed in 1996 and its headquarters are in Wynberg, Cape Town, South Africa with approximately 399 workers.

EFFECTIVENESS

  • It helps needy students pay their registration fees, tuition fees,  accommodation, grant them meal allowances and books allowance.
  • Students get more opportunities in their field of interest.
  • Deserving candidates get the benefit to study abroad and practice their subject.
  • Those students, later on, serve the country and help in its development.

INEFFECTIVENESS

  • The means test requires that the applicant's combined household income (gross) does not exceed R350,000 per annum.
  • The loan repayment began once the student had found employment and was earning R80,000 or more annually.
  • Not every candidate gets the chance.
  • Some students settle abroad and thus brain drainage is observed in the country.
