Taj Mahal in Agra is threatened by acid rain. Marble of this monument is exposed to large amounts of acidic gases such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide released by industries and refineries in the surrounding areas. As a result the rainwater in this area becomes acidic. This causes harmful effects on its texture an appearance. This phenomenon is known as ‘Marble Cancer’.
