- First world war created a new economic and political situation worldwide as increase in defence expenditure of British army was financed by introducing income tax and increasing taxes in India.
- Through the war years prices increased doubling between 1913-18 caused hardship for common people.
- Forced Recruitment (A process by which colonial state forced people to join the army) in rural areas worsened the situation.
- Also, crop failure in many parts of India resulted into food shortages.
