World War 1 was not called THE Great War for nothing.

It more difficult to find what not affected by the War than what affected by the War. In short, the War affect almost everything, both in Europe and the world.

The most obvious effect is the elimination of four European major empires. The German Empire, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and Russian Empire is abolished. There was as saying that by November 1918 there was no government between the Rhine River to the Dnieper River.

The end of this empires also sign the “birth” of many current modern nation. Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Czechoslovakia, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, and many more.

The war also make USA’s position as top three Great Powers secure. After the War, USA’s influence increase dramatically.

The war jump started communist revolution worldwide. Began with Russia, Communist powers emerged as legitimate governments. The foremost is USSR.

The war also hit the colonies in Asia and Africa. The war make even the winner nation (such as Britain and France) hold on the colony loosen for a while, thus making local independence movements thrive for a while. The grip was tighten again in the 1930s but the seed already been sewn and finally bear fruit after World War 2.

Many colonies of defunct empires also change hand to the winners. German African colonies split between Britain and France, while their Pacific colonies split between Britain and Japan. New masters, new rules, new kind of hardship.

The war also give birth to the League of Nations, a precursor organization of the today’s United Nations.
