Static friction is the friction that exists between a stationary object and the surface on which it's resting. Once the objects have already started moving, kinetic friction takes over.
Eg. Rubbing both hands together to create heat. A sled sliding across snow or ice. Skis sliding against smow. A person sliding down a slide is an example of sliding friction.
