Answer:

Materials Required:

1. Egg.

2. Conc. HCl, sucrose solution, glass tube, beaker, stand with clamp, sealing wax, water etc.

Egg Osmoscope

Procedure:

1. Make a small hole at one end of the egg with the help of a scalpel and then remove its inner contents.

2. Wash the shell of the egg with water and then attach a narrow glass tube about 1 foot (30 cm) in length through the hole by sealing wax. Lac should be used for sealing.

3. Dissolve about 1/3rd of the calcareous shell of the egg from the side opposite to the hole with concentrated HCl to expose the membrane and wash in water. The shell is made of CaCO3 and so is dissolved by HCl.

4. Fill the inner cavity of the egg with sucrose solution through the tube and mark the level of the solution inside the tube.

5. Place the whole thing in a beaker containing water and hold the set erect by stand and clamp.

Observation:

The rise of the level of liquid in the glass tube is to be recorded.

Inference:

The rise of liquid level inside the Egg Osmoscope is due to endosmosis of water through the egg membrane.
