1. The brakes applied to a car produce an acceleration of 6 m/s2 in the opposite direction to the motion.
If the car takes 2 seconds to stop after the application of brakes, calculate the distance it travels
during this time.
2. A car is moving on a straight road with uniform acceleration. The following table gives the speed of
the car at various instants of time:
+
| Speed 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 |
HH
| Time 10 |10 20 30 40 50 60 |
Draw the speed time graph by choosing a convenient scale. Determine for it:
(a) The acceleration of the car
(b) The distance travelled by the car in 60 seconds?

Answer:

1. 12m

Explanation:

Acceleration a = -6 m/s^2

Time t = 2 s

Final velocity v = 0 m/s

Let initial velocity be V

Let distance be D

Final velocity is v and initial velocity is V

V+ at

So, 0 = V + (-6)(2)

So, V = 12 m/s

Now, D= Vt + (1/2) at^2

So, D= 12(2) + (1/2)(-6)(2^2)

So, D= 24 - 12

So, D= 12 m

Thus, distance travelled is 12 m
