Most of the Northern river flows towards east Because Most of northern river are either originated from Himalayan range ; from them those going westwards are go to Pakistan ,hence we not consider them ours like Indus river(stepmotherly treatment by us in general). The rest are Ganga and B'putra ,they flow eastward because of the gradient made by Himalaya. They just follow the path which comes(from high altitude to low altitude),its general phenomenon of water flow and at last reach the bay of bengal which is at lowest altitude. Also if they flow westwards(hp,punjab, haryana, rajesthan, gujrat) they may face problem because of presence of natural resistance for water (desert and mountain) their flow intensity, speed are decreases with increase in load material by desert and reverse increasing slope.

2.Southern river are originated from the plateau regions, they also follow the natural cycle of flow of water i.e. from high altitude to low altitude.Their is smooth lowering of gradient eastwards like in case of northern rivers. But having reverse increasing slope westwards because of presence of escarpments in from southern gujrat to dharwar plateau.

The peninsular river system. The main water is divided in peninsular river is form by western ghats, which run from North to South close to western coast . Most of the major rivers from peninsula such as Mahanadi ,the Godavari the Krishna and kaveri flow eastwards and drain into Bay of Bangel
