Step-by-step explanation:

Given Problem:-

Find the value of x if the mean of the given data is 4.6. Then also find the median of the given observation 5, 7,7,8,x,5,4,3,2,1.

Solution:-

Given observations are 5,7,7,8,x,5,4,3,2,1

Sum of all observations

=>5+7+7+8+x+5+4+3+2+1

=42+x

Number of all observations=10

Mean = Sum of all observations / Number of all observations

=>Mean=(42+x)/10

According to the given problem

Mean of the data =4.6

=>(42+x)/10=4.6

=>42+x=4.6×10

=>42+x=46

=>x=46-42

=>x=4

The value of x=4

Then the observations are 5,7,7,8,4,5,4,3,2,1

On writing them into ascending order then

=>1,2,3,4,4,5,5,7,7,8

Number of observations=10 it is an even number.

Median = Average of (n/2) and (n/2)+1th observations

n/2 th observation=10/2=5th observation

5th observation=4

6th observation=5

Median=(4+5)/2

=>Median=9/2

Median=4.5

Answer:-

The value of x=4

Median= 4.5

Used formulae:-

  • Mean =Sum of all observations/Number of all observations
  • Median is the middle term of the given data when it is arranged in either ascending order or descending order.
  • If the number of observations of the data is n ,even number then the median is the average of (n/2) and (n/2)+1 th observations.
  • If the number of observations of the data is n ,odd number then the median is (n+1)/2th observations.
