letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt urging to the U.S. to start a programme of nuclear research and
develop an atom bomb before Germany did. His opinion contributed to Roosevelt’s decision to fund the
Manhattan project and led to the atom bombs which exploded over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Einstein, however, was horrified by the explosion. He later considered his letter to Roosevelt as one of his
greatest mistakes. After World War II, he urged the Allies to set up a World Government to control the
Atom Bomb.
