Draw the x−axis and y−axis.

The given point is M(−2,4)

We know that, the x−coordinate of a point is the perpendicular distance of the point from the y−axis and the y−coordinate is the perpendicular distance from the x−axis.

∴ The point M will be at a distance of 2 units, towards left from the y−axis. Left because the x−coordinate is negative. Also, the point will be at 4 units distance from the x−axis upwards. Upwards because the y−coordinate is positive.

Hence, the point M lies in the second quadrant.

Finally, the position of the point M will be as shown in the above graph.
