Refining of petroleum is done by the process of fractional distillation. The fractional distillation is based on the property that various hydrocarbons present in petroleum have different boiling points. As the number of carbon atoms in a hydrocarbon increases,it's boiling point also increases. This property is used to separate the different components of petroleum by fractional distillation. The components with different boiling points are separated out called fractions by the process of fractional distillation called refining.It is carrried out in petroleum refinery.

Various fractions are obtained at the end which gives useful products like petroleum gas(LPG), kerosone,light oil(diesel),etc.
