Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants prepare their food by using carbon dioxide and water in presence of sunlight is called Photosynthesis.
Oxygen and vapours are released as by-products.
Raw Materials For Photosynthesis
- Carbon dioxide from air
- Water from soil
Products of Photosynthesis
- Carbohydrates (main product)
- Oxygen (by product)
- Water vapours

Some other points :-
- The initial product of photosynthesis is a carbohydrate - glucose which gets converted into starch.
- Carbohydrates contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
- Some carbohydrates are also converted to proteins and fats.
- Besides carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, proteins also contains nitrogen.
'Photosynthesis is a unique process' because its supplies food, directly or indirectly, for all living organisms. The energy of the sun, thus, get passed on to all organism through plants. Plants also provide oxygen, needed by all living organism for respiration.
Some plants have leaves which are not in green in colour. They contain chlorophyll but they also have some additional pigments too. The presence of additional pigments causes other leaf colours. However, such leaves still perform the process of photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis is defined as a process when plants use light energy and convert it into chemical energy. During photosynthesis in plants, light energy is captured and is used to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and energy-rich organic compounds.
