Lilliput and Blefuscu were two island nations which were separated by a 800 yards wide channel. They were inhabited by tiny people who were around 1/12th the height of ordinary human beings. They were ruled by emperors.
The conflict between the two empires began when the Lilliputian emperor's grandfather ordered that all Lilliputians should break their eggs on the small end first. He made this decision because his finger was hurt when he broke an egg in the traditional way of breaking the large end first.
The people were not in favour of this. There were six rebellions to protest against the law. The monarchs of Blefuscu encouraged the rebellions. When the rebellions were over the rebels sought refuge in Blefuscu.
Eleven thousand people preferred to die instead of following the law. A number of books were written on the controversy. But the books which were written by the Big-Endians were banned in Lilliput.
The Lilliputians were accused of disobeying the religious doctrines recorded in the Blundecral, by breaking the eggs at the small end. The Lilliputians justified themselves by saying that the doctrine states, 'all believers shall break their eggs at the convenient end'. According to them 'convenient end' could be interpreted as the small end.
The exiles gained support in Blefuscu. So Blefuscu launched a war against Lilliput.
In Gulliver’s Travel, Lilliputians and the blefuscudians are the two great fictional empires who are rivals of each other. They disagree on the correct way of breaking an egg. The Lilliputians present emperor’s great grandfather’s son broke an egg on its larger end and hurt his hand. So, an edict was passed demanding Lilliputians to break the egg on the smaller end.
Lilliputian and Blefuscudian were 1/12 size of an ordinary man and initially, six of them revolted against the edict and they were supported by the Blefuscudians emperor. These six of them took refuge Blefuscu. In this, one emperor lost his life and the other his throne.
“The Lilliputian and Blefuscudian are the satirical portraits of The Great Britain and the Kingdom of France” created by Jonathan Swift. The dispute between the two, states the religious disputes in Britain. It also depicts the political parody that existed in Britain between the Whigs and the Tories and their fighting were always of trivial nature.
Earlier Britain had been a Catholic country but after the reforms, it became a Protestant country which led to many revolts and rebellions. In this revolt, King James I, lost his life and King James II lost his crown. This is what is depicted by Swift through the dispute of Big-Endians and small-Endians.
