They are categorized as Hinge joint. Another example of Hinge joints is the knee joint.

The characteristic of a hinge joint that can be witnessed quite clearly in both elbows and knees is the movement of the joint that allows for both the joints to be opening and closing in the same direction.

Thus both joints open in the same direction and both close in the same direction.
