Answer:

        AN UNEXPECTED GIFT

An elderly carpenter decided to retire. He told his employer-contractor that he wanted to quit the job and live a more leisurely life with his wife and children. Of course, he would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire.

His employer was sorry to see his good worker retire and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was the last project he would undertake and he thought that he had no reason to satisfy his employer or his customers. No matter how he built the house, he would not be getting any new work.

When the carpenter finished the work, his employer came to inspect the house. He then handed the front-door key to the carpenter. “This is your house,” he said, “my gift to you.”

The carpenter was at a loss of words. If only he had known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built not too well.

Moral: Always give your best effort in everything.
