in election campaign is the public campaign that is undertaken by a candidate after his/her application to contest in elections is accepted by the election commission. A campaign involves reaching out the voters directly and indirectly. A candidate may directly reach out to the voters through election rallies and roadshows. Mass media like television and radio are utilised for this purpose. In modern age, the internet and social media are also being used for the same. A candidate tries to draw the attention of voters to local and national issues and outlines his/her party's position on them. Candidates have to ensure that their point of view is received by the voters and their solution to the issues are given weightage.

Code of Conduct for election campaign sets norms and guidelines to be followed during election time by political parties and contesting candidates.

Explanation:

  • A Model Code of Conduct is agreed by all the political parties in India for election campaigns. This Model Code of Conduct states that no party or candidate, for election propaganda, can use any place of worship, government vehicles, aircrafts and officials; and once elections are announced, foundation stones of any projects should not be laid, big policy decisions should not be made, and any promises of providing public facilities should not be made by the Ministers.
