★Procedure of Elections in India
Elections in India are held at periodic intervals and the entire responsibility of conducting elections in the country rests with the Election Commission. There are three types of elections that are conducted in India:
- General elections: These are held every five years and all the constituencies in the country participate in these elections to choose their representatives.
- Mid-term elections: These elections take place before the completion of the term of the government.
- By-elections: These elections are held to fill a political office which has fallen vacant between scheduled elections.
◉Procedure that is followed while conducting elections in the country:
- For the purpose of elections, the various lale In the country are divided into many smaller units known as constituencies.
- The Election Commission prepares a list with the names of eligible voters for each constituency. This list is known as the voter's list or the electoral roll.
- An Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) is issued to every eligible voter by the Election Commission to ensure that a voter casts a single vote during the election. (The EPIC acts as a proof of identity when one casts her/his vote during elections.
- Candidates from different political parties and even independent candidates contest in the elections by submitting their nomination papers.
- Political parties and their candidates are given a fred amount of time to persuade voters to vote for them. This process of persuading voters is known as campaigning.
- On the day of the election, eligible voters are expected to go to the polling stations that have been set up in their constituencies and cast their vote.
- In India, votes are now cast through an Electronic Voting Machine. This ensures that there is no mishandling of the votes cast.
- The candidates elected to the legislature of the state are known as the Members of Legislative Assembly or MLAs, while those who are elected to the legislature at the central level, the Parliament, are known as Members of Parliament or MPs.
