Because in a series connection the current is same through out the circuit therefore the appliances cannot work to their full capacity.

When electrical appliances are connected in series,
1) current is same, this is a disadvantage as different electrical appliances need different values of current to operate properly
2)the effective resistance is higher, this leads to lesser flow of current
3)if one component fails, the whole circuit is broken and the remaining components will not function
4)the voltage of each appliance might change
