Take water in a beaker, add a teaspoon of salt or a few drops of lemon juice to make it more conducting. Here water is electrolyte. Now immerse carbon rods ( electrodes ) in the water. Connect the electrodes to a battery. Wait for 3 - 4 minutes. Observe the electrodes. Bubbles of gases are evolved at the electrodes. Oxygen is evolved at the anode and hydrogen is evolved at the cathode ( anode is the electrode connected to the positive terminal of the battery and cathod is connected to the negetive terminal of the battery. ) Water decomposes to hydrogen and oxygen by passing electric current. This process is called electrolysis.
