The chemical decomposition produced by passing electric current through a conducting liquid is called electrolysis.

Example of electrolysis:

                                   Electrolysis of water

Equation: Water + Electric current(chemical reaction) ⇒ Hydrogen + Oxygen

The decomposition of acidified water into hydrogen and oxygen gas by passing an electric current is an example of electrolysis.

i) Oxygen is a non-metal, therefore it has negatively charged ions or Anions. These anions of oxygen attract towards the positive electrode that is Anode.

ii) Hydrogen has positively charged ions called Cations. These cations of hydrogen go and attract towards the negative electrode called Cathode.

In the year 1800, a British chemist, William Nicholson had shown the electrolysis of water.

In electrolysis of water, water is decomposed into two elements called hydrogen and oxygen and bubbles of these gases can be seen on the electrodes.
