ELECTROLYSIS:

  • The process in which components of a compound get split due to passage of electric current through it, is called electrolysis.

  • In the process Electrolysis, the electricity is passed into the conducting solution through the two ELECTRODES (conducting rods) which are connected to the two terminals of the battery.

Electrolysis of water:-

➢ The process of splitting liquid water into its two components gases is called Electrolysis of water.

➢ Water is a compound of hydrogen & oxygen gases.

➢ Water is stable compound & cannot be separated into hydrogen & oxygen on heating or by any other process than Electrolysis.

➢ On passing electric current in impure water, it splits up into its component gases, hydrogen & oxygen.

➢ Hydrogen gas gets collected over cathode (electrode connected to the negative terminal of the battery).

➢ Oxygen gas gets collected over anode (electrode connected to the positive terminal of the battery).

➢ Voltameter is the apparatus used for electrolysis.
