Given : Electrolysis of water can be used as a method of preparation of oxygen and hydrogen gas. In an experiment 22.4 mL/s oxygen
required.
To find : The current supplied to carry out the experiment at STP.
solution : no of moles of oxygen required = 22.4ml/22400 ml
= 10¯³ mol
as reaction takes as shown in below...
2H₂O ⇒2H₂ + O₂
here, 2O²¯ + 4e¯⇔ O₂
so we need 4e¯ charge per mole .
so total current = no of moles of oxygen required × 4e¯ × Avogadro's number
= 10¯³ × 4 × 1.602 × 10^-19 × 6.023 × 10²³
= 6.408 × 6.023 × 10
= 64.08 × 6.023
= 385.95 A ≈ 386 A
Therefore the current supplied to carry out the experiment at STP is 386 A.
