Explain the phenomenon of electrical conduction in semi conductors?

The cause of electrical conduction in semiconductors is due to the movement of the holes in the valence band and the movement of the electrons in the conduction band.

When electric field is applied then as a result the electrons will start moving in the conduction band in the direction opposite to that of the electric field. The current produced at that time is known as hole current. In other words we can say that two types of currents are mainly working in the semi conductor. One is the hole current that is due to the movement of the holes in the valence band and other is the electronic current which is caused by the movement of the electrons in the conduction band. The total resultant current in the semi conductor is the sum of the both the currents.

Electronic conduction through semi-conductor is due to free electrons and holes

Explanation:

Semiconductor: It is of two types.

1.P-type semiconductor

2.n-type semiconductor

1.p-type semiconductor:

When the elements of group 14 such as Si( four electrons in outermost shell)doped with elements of group 13 then,it forms 3 bond with neighbouring element such as Al(three electron in outermost shell).

Then, the fourth electron of Al is missing and it creates a hole.

Then, the electron of neighbouring atom jump and fill the hole and creates another hole.

Thus, this process continued and the movement of holes produces current in the semi-conductor.

2.n-type semi- conductor:When the elements of group 14 such as Si( four electrons in outermost shell)doped with elements of group 15 (five electron in outermost shell) such as P then, 4 electrons of Si formed four bonds with four electrons of P and fifth electron of P is free to move.

The neighbouring bond break and the free electron formed bond with electron of neighbouring atom and another electron is free to move.

Thus, this process continued and movement of electrons produces current in the semi- conductor.

Therefore, Electronic conduction through semi-conductor is due to free electrons and holes
