Electronic configuration is found by the help of electron filling rules and atomic no. or no. of total electrons in the charged species.

At your standard, we study only the concept of different atomic shells like K,L,M,N etc in which the electrons are filled according to the given rules.

1. The electrons are filled as 2,8,18,32 etc. for corresponding K L M N shells etc respectively.

2. Any shell can have 18 electrons only when the previous has required no. of 8 electrons and similarly the shell can have 32 electrons when the previous has 18 electrons.

3.The shells with minimum energies are filled first as at first K then L then M and N etc..

4. Octet rule : The last shell can not have more than 8 electrons though they have a capacity of 18 or 32 etc.

Ex: for an atom with atomic no . 28( Ni), electronic configuration = 2,8,16,2

However, the shells have been further classified in sub shells s,p,d,and f which you will study in higher classes.
