The electronic configuration of magnesium atom is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2. where as in magnesium ions the electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p6 which attains Neon configuration.
In magnesium atom K shell contains 2 electrons and L shell contains 8 electrons and M shell contains 2 electrons which are valence electrons.
In magnesium ion that contains positive charge 2 As usual K and L shells have same number of electrons. But M shell is not present...
According to orbitals, electrons are arranged in mg atom and ion.
