  • In sulphonation , SO3 is attacking electrophilic species.

  • Sulphur trioxide is formed by the dissociation of sulphuric acid.

  • 2 H2SO4 ———> H3O+ + HSO4– (hydrogen sulphate ion) + SO3 (sulphur trioxide as electrophile)
