Question:-
- What is electroplating process ?
→ the process of using electric current to deposit and electrically conductive material with relative thin layer over another metal object by the process of electrolysis is called electroplating.
2. Define the process in brief.
→ the process of electroplating is done by using an electrolytic cell. The object to be electroplated is used as cathode and connected to the negative terminal of a battery.
The metal object that is to be coated over, is used as anode and it is connected to the positive terminal of the battery . the electrolyte used for electroplating should be a water soluble salt of the metal to be deposited. For example, if a zinc plate is to be electroplated with copper metal, we use copper as an anode and the zinc plate as cathode. The electrolyte used in this case, is copper sulphate solution.
similarly, if a substance made of iron is to be electroplated with silver, we use the iron substance as cathode and the Silver metal plate as anode.
