no they differ in valency they are similar in character

well there you are wrong because in transitional metals you can observe multiple valency. There we have p and d orbitals which are empty.
So you can't just comment on valency according to their group

Well there no. of valence electrons ie electrons in outermost shell are equal.
So they are kept in same group but their chemical properties can be different.
