Elements forming ionic compounds attain noble gas configuration by either gaining or loosing electrons from their valance shells. Explain giving reason why carbon cannot attain such a configuration in this manner to form its compounds. Name the type of bond formed in ionic compounds and in the compounds formed by carbon. Also explain with reason why carbon compounds are generally poor conductor of electricity.

Answer:

Explanation:

In ionic compounds, there is an electronegative element and an electropositive element, thus, the electrons are transfered to the electronegative element. The bond between ionic compounds is called ionic bond. Carbon cannot form ionic bonds since its electronegativity is almost the same with almost all the elements in the periodic table, and hence, carbon forms covalent compounds, thus, forming covalent bonds. Ionic bonds are good conductors of electricity, since there are presence of positive and negative charges. But, since carbon forms covalent bond, the electrons are mutually shared and hence, carbon's compounds (except graphite, which has one free electron) are generally poor conductors of electricity
