elements have symbols that do not appear to match their names. For
example, the symbol for sodium is Na. Why is this?

They are called as in their latin names(Na=Natrium)

Explanation:

Because latin is a dead language, some people thought of having names in latin rather than in another language to avoid confusion.

Example. fe as for Iron etc!!
