Transition elements are those that have two outermost shells that aren't complete. Elements with a partially filled d orbital are known as transition elements.

Elements with two electrons

The atomic number of Fe is 26,2,8,14,2. and in  Fe the outermost shell has  two electrons. Mn has the atomic number 25,2,8,13,2 because it has two electrons in the outermost shell.

Transition elements:

  • Elements with partially filled d orbitals are known as transition elements (or transition metals).
  • An element with a partially full d subshell or the ability to create stable cations with an incompletely filled d orbital is defined as a transition element by IUPAC.
  • Transition metals' behavior is due to the shielding effect as well as the same outermost shell configuration.
