Elements X,Y,Z have atomic numbers 9,19,16 respectively. Which of them i) forms
anion ii) forms cation iii)Calculate the number of electrons present in the outer most
shell.

  1. X and Z forms anion because their electronic configuration is (2,7) and (2,8,6) and to complete octet X needs 1 more electron and Z needs 2 electron and therefore X gains one electron and Z gains 2 electron and forms anion.
  2. Y forms a cation because electronic configuration of Y is (2,8,8,1) and to attain a noble gas configuration it loses one electron and forms a cation
  3. outer most shell of X contains 7 electrons .

.outermost shell of Y contains 1 electron

.outermost shell of Z contains 6 electrons.
