Given:

In the morning she has 3 transportation choices. And in the evening the same 3 choices .

Choices are bus , cab or train,

To Find:

The probability that she will use a cab exactly one time

Solution:

Since each choice have an equal chance of being chosen,

  • Probability(Choosing bus ) = 1/3
  • Probability(Choosing cab ) = 1/3
  • Probability(Choosing train ) = 1/3

Now,

  • Probability(Not Choosing cab ) = 2/3

Now there are two possibilities.

She chooses cab in the morning and something else in the evening.

Or She chooses  cab in the evening and something else in the morning.

Therefore,

  • P( choosing cab exactly one time) = P(cab in morning)xP(not cab in evening) + P(not cab in morning)xP(cab in evening)
  • P( cab exactly once) = 1/3 x 2/3  + 2/3 x 1/3
  • P( cab exactly once) = 4/9

The probability that she will use a cab exactly one time is 4/9.
