Dengue fever is caused by any one of four types of dengue viruses spread by mosquitoes that thrive in and near human lodgings. When a mosquito bites a person infected with a dengue virus, the virus enters the mosquito. When the infected mosquito then bites another person, the virus enters that person's bloodstream.

It sounds awful, but most people recover in a week or so. But if the symptoms get worse and you don't see a doctor, it can become life threatening. There is unfortunately no vaccine or cure for dengue fever, so if you think you have it, rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take a pain reliever with acetaminophen.

Warning Signs

1. Abdominal pain or tenderness.
2. Persistent vomiting.
3. Clinical fluid accumulation.
4. Mucosal bleed.
5. Lethargy or restlessness.
6. Liver enlargement > 2 cm.
7. Laboratory finding of increasing HCT concurrent with rapid decrease in platelet count.
