Not marble nor gilded monuments signify that the rich and the powerful get monuments and statues erected on the one hand to give an ostentatious display of their wealth and on the other to perpetuate their names even after their death. However these monuments and statues fail to fulfill their latter wish. The poet conveys that PEN US MIGHTIER THAN SWORD! therefore the power of gods and all destructive wars cannot destroy the power of his poetry.
