Before we examine the structure and features of tribal society, it would be relevant to understand the meaning of the word “Tribe” as used in Sociology. According to George Peter Murdock, tribe is a social group in which there are many clans, nomadic bands, villages or other sub-groups which usually have a definite geographical area, a separate language, a singular and distinct culture and either a common political organisation or at least a feeling of common determination against the strangers.
